6-Day Kilimanjaro — Rongai Route
Overview
The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border, offering a completely different experience to the busier southern routes. This is the only route that begins on the northern side of the mountain, meaning drier conditions, fewer climbers, and a true sense of wilderness. The landscape transitions from lush farmland and pine forest through the remote northern slopes before joining the Marangu descent path. With a gradual ascent profile and an excellent acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn — camped beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi peak — Rongai is an outstanding choice for those seeking solitude on Africa's highest mountain.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1 — Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
After breakfast in Moshi, drive 2.5 hours north to the remote Rongai Gate (1,950 m), near the Kenyan border village of Loitokitok. After registering with the national park, begin trekking through rolling farmland and pine forest plantations, with expansive views of the Kenyan plains stretching to the northern horizon. The trail climbs gradually through the forest, and the north side's drier climate means a very different vegetation experience from the southern routes. After 3—4 hours, arrive at Simba Camp (2,675 m) set at the edge of the heath zone. The quiet here is profound — you are on the mountain's least traveled path.

Day 2 — Simba Camp to Second Cave
Rise early to a spectacular sunrise over the Kenyan plains. Today's trek climbs steadily through the heath and moorland zone, with the trail winding between giant heathers and occasional giant groundsels. Kilimanjaro's glaciers shimmer tantalizingly in the distance. The northern slope is gentler and more gradual than the southern approaches, making for a more relaxed walking pace. After 4—5 hours, reach Second Cave Camp (3,450 m), a sheltered campsite near a natural rock overhang. The views south across the East African savannah are breathtaking.

Day 3 — Second Cave to Kikelelwa Camp
The trail continues through the moorland, with vegetation thinning as you gain altitude. Today's highlight is the transition into alpine desert, where views of the jagged Mawenzi Peak come into focus. The path crosses a series of ridges with magnificent panoramas of the northern plains and the Kibo massif simultaneously. After 3—5 hours, arrive at Kikelelwa Camp (3,600 m), nestled in a sheltered valley with a stream. The afternoon is perfect for resting, hydrating, and watching the light change on Mawenzi's dramatic spires.

Day 4 — Kikelelwa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn
A shorter but steeper day as you climb into the alpine desert toward the base of Mawenzi. The trail crosses a stark, arid landscape of volcanic scree and ancient lava flows, with the shark-tooth spires of Mawenzi dominating the view. After 3—4 hours, reach Mawenzi Tarn (4,330 m) — a small, seasonal lake set directly beneath Mawenzi Peak. This is one of the most spectacular campsites on the entire mountain, starkly beautiful and deeply peaceful. In the afternoon, take an acclimatization walk up the Mawenzi Ridge, climbing to around 4,500 m before returning to camp. The views of Kibo from this vantage point are nothing short of magnificent.

Day 5 — Summit Night to Horombo Hut
Rise around midnight for tea and biscuits before beginning the long summit push. The trail crosses the lunar-like Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo — a vast, featureless plain of volcanic dust that feels utterly otherworldly under the stars. Reach Gilman's Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim as the sun rises, then continue along the crater rim for approximately 1.5—2 hours to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). The sense of isolation and triumph on this remote route is profound. After summit photos, descend to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut (3,720 m) on the Marangu route for your final camp meal and a genuinely well-earned sleep.

Day 6 — Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Wake to the forest air and the sounds of birds returning at lower altitude. The final 5—7 hour descent through the heath and lush montane rainforest is a journey of transformation — from the frozen arctic summit to the warm, humid embrace of the cloud forest. Arrive at Marangu Gate (1,860 m) to sign out and receive your summit certificate. The farewell ceremony with your team marks the end of an extraordinary journey. Transfer to Moshi for a hot shower and a celebration that is many days in the making.
