Africa Merit Safaris

What to Pack for Your Safari

Packing for an African safari requires thoughtful planning. The key is to pack light but smart — most safari vehicles have limited luggage space, especially if you are taking internal flights (soft-sided bags only, maximum 15kg per person).

Clothing: Pack neutral-colored clothing (khaki, beige, olive green) that blends with the bush environment. Avoid bright colors and dark blue/black which attract tsetse flies. Bring lightweight, breathable fabrics for daytime and warmer layers for early morning game drives and evenings. A fleece or light jacket is essential even in 'warm' seasons.

Essential items: Wide-brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, insect repellent with DEET, lip balm with sun protection, and a reusable water bottle. Binoculars are essential for wildlife viewing — we recommend 8x42 or 10x42 magnification.

Footwear: Comfortable closed shoes or lightweight hiking boots for walking safaris and uneven terrain. Sandals are fine for camp and lodge use.

For Kilimanjaro: You will need additional specialized gear including insulated jacket, thermal base layers, waterproof shell, trekking poles, headlamp, and a four-season sleeping bag. We provide a comprehensive Kilimanjaro packing list upon booking.

Electronics: Tanzania uses Type G and Type D sockets (230V). Bring a universal adapter. Charging facilities are available at all lodges, though some camps may have limited generator hours. A power bank is recommended.

Photography: A camera with a zoom lens (minimum 200mm, ideally 400mm+) for wildlife. Extra memory cards and batteries. A beanbag makes an excellent stabilizer on the vehicle roof.
