3-Day Mount Meru Climb

3-Day Mount Meru Climb

3 days

Overview

Mount Meru, Tanzania's second-highest peak at 4,566 meters, offers one of East Africa's most rewarding and underrated treks. Located within Arusha National Park, this dramatic volcano provides stunning views of its own ash cone, the Momela Lakes, and — on clear days — Kilimanjaro floating on the horizon just 70 kilometers away. Unlike Kilimanjaro, Meru requires an armed ranger escort due to the abundant wildlife along the lower slopes, adding a thrilling safari element to your trek. The 3-day itinerary is a fast-paced adventure culminating in a dramatic dawn summit from Saddle Hut.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

Depart Moshi or Arusha early morning and drive to Momella Gate (1,500 m) in Arusha National Park. After completing registration and meeting your armed ranger, begin trekking through open grassland dotted with acacia trees. Keep your camera ready — giraffe, buffalo, warthog, and various antelope species are frequently seen along this section. The trail climbs steadily through montane forest, where black-and-white colobus monkeys and blue monkeys chatter overhead. Capture glimpses of the sheer cliffs of Meru's crater wall through breaks in the canopy. After 4—6 hours, arrive at Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m), a set of comfortable A-frame chalets perched on a forested ridge. Enjoy a hot dinner as the sun sets over the plains.

Day 2 — Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

After an early breakfast, begin the steep ascent from Miriakamba Hut through dense montane forest that gradually gives way to giant heather and moorland. The climb is challenging but steady, and as you gain altitude the views become increasingly dramatic. Pass the picturesque Fig Tree Arch — a strangler fig that has formed a natural gateway across the trail. After 3—5 hours, arrive at Saddle Hut (3,570 m), dramatically positioned on a narrow ridge between Meru's summit cone and the inner cliffs of the old crater. In the afternoon, take an acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820 m) for breathtaking views of the ash cone, the crater wall, and the distant shimmer of Kilimanjaro to the east. Return to Saddle Hut for an early dinner and briefing. Wake-up call is at midnight.

Day 3 — Summit to Momella Gate

Rise at midnight for tea and a light snack. Your headlamp illuminates the rocky trail as you begin the final push to Socialist Peak (4,566 m). The narrow path winds along the crater rim with steep drops on both sides — an exhilarating traverse under a canopy of stars. Reach the summit in time for sunrise, and the reward is staggering: the entire volcanic crater spread below you, the Momela Lakes glittering on the plains, and — if the weather cooperates — Mount Kilimanjaro outlined in blazing dawn light to the east. After photographs and celebration, descend to Saddle Hut for a hearty brunch, then continue all the way back down to Momella Gate. Total descent takes 5—7 hours. Transfer back to your hotel for a well-earned celebration.
