7-Day Kilimanjaro — Machame Route
Overview
The 7-day Machame route is our most recommended Kilimanjaro itinerary, adding a vital extra acclimatization day at Karanga Valley. This additional night dramatically improves summit success rates by giving your body more time to adjust to the thinning air. You still experience all the scenic drama of Machame — the rainforest, Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall — but at a more relaxed pace that leaves you fresher and better prepared for the ultimate challenge of summit night. If you have the extra day, this is the itinerary to choose.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1 — Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Depart Moshi after breakfast and drive to Machame Gate (1,790 m) for registration. Begin trekking through lush montane rainforest with towering camphor trees and giant ferns. Listen for colobus monkeys calling above and enjoy the cool mist on your face. After 5—7 hours of steady hiking, arrive at Machame Camp (2,835 m), perched just above the tree line. Your crew will have camp ready with hot washing water, tea, and a three-course dinner.

Day 2 — Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Break camp and climb steeply out of the forest into the heath and moorland zone, where giant groundsels and lobelias create an otherworldly landscape. The views open up dramatically as the trail follows a rocky ridge, with Kibo's snow-capped summit and the Shira Plateau sprawling below. After 4—6 hours, settle into Shira Camp (3,750 m) for a breathtaking sunset over Mount Meru and the vast African plains beyond. Hot soup, dinner, and a spectacular star canopy complete the evening.

Day 3 — Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
This critical acclimatization day takes you into the alpine desert. Hike east across the Shira Plateau toward Kibo, gradually gaining altitude until you reach Lava Tower (4,600 m) — a striking volcanic plug where you'll have lunch. Take your time here; the altitude is real but the principle of 'climb high, sleep low' works wonders. In the afternoon, descend into the lush Great Barranco Valley with its towering senecios and dramatic views of the Barranco Wall and hanging glaciers. Camp at Barranco Camp (3,900 m), one of the most spectacular campsites on the mountain.

Day 4 — Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
After breakfast, tackle the Barranco Wall — a 200-meter scramble using hands and feet over volcanic rock, with your guides assisting every step. The wall looks intimidating but is far less technical than it appears, and reaching the top is a huge morale boost. From the summit of the wall, enjoy sweeping views across the Southern Icefields before descending and ascending through a series of valleys and ridges. Arrive at Karanga Camp (3,995 m) after 3—5 hours, with the afternoon free to rest, hydrate, and explore the surrounding ridges for spectacular photographic opportunities. This short day and extra night at altitude are the secret to the 7-day route's outstanding success rate.

Day 5 — Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Depart Karanga after a relaxed breakfast and continue traversing the barren alpine desert toward Barafu Camp. The trail threads across a rocky ridge with Kibo looming ever larger ahead and the endless African plains stretching to the horizon behind you. After 3—4 hours of trekking, arrive at Barafu Camp (4,673 m) — a stark, wind-blasted ridge that will be your launchpad for the summit. Spend the afternoon organizing your gear for the midnight departure, drinking as much fluid as possible, and forcing down a carbohydrate-rich dinner. Try to sleep early — the summit wake-up comes at midnight.

Day 6 — Summit Night to Mweka Camp
Midnight. Hot tea, biscuits, and the moment you have trained for. Under a field of stars so bright they seem within reach, your headlamp picks out the switchback trail ahead as you begin the steep climb to Stella Point (5,756 m). Every breath is shallow at this altitude — your guides will keep the pace achingly slow, calling 'pole pole' and offering encouragement. Reach Stella Point as dawn breaks, flooding the glaciers and crater rim with golden light. The hardest part is behind you. From here, a relatively gentle 45-minute walk along the crater rim brings you to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). You have made it to the Roof of Africa. After photos and quiet reflection, descend to Barafu for brunch and a brief rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100 m) where thicker air and a celebratory dinner await.

Day 7 — Mweka Camp to Moshi
The final descent through lush rainforest takes 3—4 hours as the temperature rises and the air grows deliciously thick. Arrive at Mweka Gate (1,640 m) where you will sign out and receive your summit certificate — gold if you reached Uhuru Peak. The traditional farewell ceremony with your team is emotional and joyous, filled with Swahili songs and heartfelt thanks. Our vehicle will transfer you to your hotel in Moshi to begin the transformation from dusty mountaineer back to civilized human being.
