Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arusha to Ngorongoro Crater
Begin your migration adventure with a drive from Arusha to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The journey takes about three and a half hours, but regular stops break up the trip — look for Maasai herders with their cattle and stop for panoramic photographs at the Rift Valley viewpoint. Arrive at Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge by lunchtime. The lodge's crater-rim position offers a breathtaking introduction to the scale of the African landscape. After lunch at the lodge, children receive their Great Migration Activity Pack, which includes a specially designed wildlife scavenger hunt checklist featuring all the animals of the migration ecosystem — from wildebeest and zebras to the predators that follow them. The afternoon is free to swim, explore the lodge grounds, and complete the first pages of the activity book. A family-friendly dinner includes an introductory talk from your guide about the migration: why the animals move, where they go, and what your family can expect to see.

Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater Safari
Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater at dawn for a full-day safari in this natural amphitheater of wildlife. The crater floor is a microcosm of the Serengeti ecosystem, and during the green season many migratory wildebeest and zebra calve right here on the crater floor. Children can witness newborn calves taking their first wobbly steps, keeping a respectful distance while your guide explains the circle of life. The crater's high concentration of predators — lions, hyenas, and jackals — provides an unmatched opportunity to observe predator-prey dynamics, a key part of understanding the migration story. A picnic lunch at a designated site breaks up the day. Ascend from the crater by late afternoon with full wildlife checklists, then cool off at the lodge swimming pool. After dinner, the children can present their 'safari spotting awards' from the day's sightings.

Day 3: Ngorongoro to Serengeti — Migration Tracking
Today the migration hunt begins in earnest. After breakfast, drive from Ngorongoro into the Serengeti ecosystem. The route passes through the Ndutu area, which during December through March hosts the wildebeest calving season on the southern plains. Your guide follows the latest migration movements, using radio networks and years of experience to position your family where the herds are. Spotting the migration is a thrilling scavenger hunt in itself — the children scan the horizon through binoculars, and the first sighting of the endless herds stretching from one edge of the plains to the other is a moment of pure wonder. Stop for a picnic lunch with the migration as your backdrop. Continue to Serengeti Sopa Lodge in the central Serengeti, arriving by late afternoon. The swimming pool and spacious family rooms provide a welcome respite before dinner and a migration-themed movie presentation in the lodge lounge.

Day 4: Migration-Focused Full Day in Serengeti
A full day dedicated to following the migration herds. Depending on the season, your guide takes you to the best viewing areas: the southern plains for calving (December–March), the western corridor for Grumeti River crossings (April–June), or the northern Serengeti for the dramatic Mara River crossings (July–October). Throughout the day, children use their scavenger hunt checklists to identify not just wildebeest and zebras, but the supporting cast: the vultures that circle overhead, the crocodiles that lie in wait at river crossings, the gazelles that graze alongside the herds, and the cheetahs that hunt on the fringes. Your guide explains how every animal plays a role in the migration ecosystem. A picnic lunch keeps you close to the action. Return to the lodge by late afternoon for pool time and the migration activity pack's final challenges. A celebratory dinner marks the children's achievements as Migration Explorers.

Day 5: Morning Game Drive & Return to Arusha
A final early morning game drive offers one last opportunity to witness the migration before departing. The soft light of dawn over endless herds is a memory that will stay with your family forever. Return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast, then pack up for the journey back. The drive from central Serengeti to Arusha takes about six hours, but includes an en-route game drive through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and a lunch stop. Alternatively, upgrade to a fly-out from Seronera Airstrip for a scenic one-hour flight (optional extra). Upon arrival in Arusha, day rooms at Arusha Planet Lodge are available before your evening flight. Each child receives a Migration Explorer certificate and their completed scavenger hunt checklist as a souvenir of their role in witnessing the greatest wildlife show on Earth.
