Health & Safety Guide

Your health and safety are our top priorities at Africa Merit Safaris. Tanzania is a safe destination for travelers, but it is important to take sensible precautions.

Medical Preparations: Visit a travel clinic 4-6 weeks before your trip. Recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus, and Yellow Fever (mandatory if arriving from endemic countries). Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for all safari destinations — consult your doctor about the right medication for you.

On Safari: Your guide is trained in wilderness first aid and carries a comprehensive medical kit. We provide bottled water throughout your trip for drinking and brushing teeth. All our lodges and camps maintain high standards of food hygiene. Avoid drinking tap water and be cautious with street food.

Wildlife Safety: Always follow your guide's instructions. Never exit the vehicle except in designated areas. Do not approach, feed, or attempt to touch any wild animals. Keep your voice low and avoid sudden movements during game drives. At night in tented camps, always use the provided flashlight and ask for an escort to and from your tent.

Altitude on Kilimanjaro: Altitude sickness is the biggest risk. We carry pulse oximeters and check your oxygen levels daily. Our guides are trained to recognize symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). We carry emergency oxygen on every climb and have evacuation plans in place.

Insurance: Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for all our trips. Your policy must cover medical expenses, emergency evacuation, trip cancellation, and baggage loss. We recommend policies that cover activities at altitude (up to 6,000m) if climbing Kilimanjaro.
