Best Time to Visit Tanzania

Tanzania is a year-round safari destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to experience.

The dry season (June to October) is widely considered the best time for wildlife viewing. Vegetation is sparse, animals congregate around water sources, and the weather is pleasant with clear skies. This is the peak tourist season, so parks can be busier and accommodation prices higher.

The Great Migration in the Serengeti follows a circular pattern throughout the year. From December to March, the herds gather in the southern Serengeti for calving season — an excellent time to see baby wildebeest and predator action. From June to July, the herds move north, and the dramatic river crossings at the Grumeti and Mara Rivers typically occur between July and September.

The green season (November to May) offers lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and excellent bird watching with migratory species present. The 'short rains' in November and 'long rains' from March to May bring afternoon showers, but mornings are often clear and game viewing is still rewarding.

For Kilimanjaro climbs, the best months are January–March and June–October. These periods offer the driest conditions and clearest skies. The rainy months (April–May and November) are less ideal but can offer solitude for experienced trekkers.

Zanzibar enjoys a tropical climate year-round. The best beach weather is December–March and June–October. The main rainy season (March–May) brings heavy downpours, while the short rains (November) are lighter.
