Western Tanzania Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival Dar es salaam city

Arrive at Katavi Airstrip in the morning from Arusha. Your expert naturalist guide will pick you up in a Land Cruiser and drive you to Katavi Wildlife camp, with a little game viewing on the way. Afterwards, head out into the park for a game drive and return in time for evening sundowners around the fire pit and a delicious family-style dinner. Enjoy a good night’s sleep as you are lulled by the sound of nature in your en-suite Meru-style tent

Day 2: Katavi National Park

Wake to an alarm clock of animal noises and step out onto your veranda for a sunrise stretch. Who knows what beasts may be within sight! After a hot breakfast in the main banda, depart the lodge for your morning game drive. With an area of 4471 km², Katavi National Park is Tanzania’s third largest park and one of its most unspoiled wilderness areas. It is well known for its high habitat and species diversity with high concentrations of large mammals. Katavi also serves as a refuge for endangered species such as wild dogs and cheetahs. Return to camp for lunch and spend a couple of hours relaxing, perhaps reading in the hammock on your veranda, before heading out for an early evening game drive.

Day 3: Katavi National Park

After breakfast, depart camp for a full day game drive deep into the heart of Katavi National Park. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the park. Return to camp in the late afternoon. Freshen up with a shower and gather round the fire for one last evening sundowner in Katavi, followed by another fine family-style dinner. After dinner, head out for a night game drive where you are likely to see the predators behaving differently than you have during the day. Return to camp and settle in for a good night’s sleep.

Day 4: Mahale Mountains National Park

After breakfast, depart camp and drive to the Katavi Airstrip with game viewing along the way. Board your charter flight from Katavi to Mahale Airstrip. An Alfred Safaris representative will pick you up to bring you to the dhow (traditional boat) which will take you on a 1.5-hour ride to Mbali Mbali Mahale, a collection of nine beach tents set deep in the heart of the African interior on a stretch of secluded golden beach, a perfect blend of comfort and luxury in a romantic setting. The lodge staff extends their warm welcome, and after, you settle into your stunning beach tent, enjoy a lunch featuring the local flavors of this region on the beach. In the late afternoon, depart on a chimpanzee trek or forest walk (depending on time), led by your expert guide. Enjoy evening sundowners followed by a lovely dinner on the beach.

Day 5: Mahale Mountains National Park

After breakfast, depart for morning chimpanzee trekking. Mahale Mountains National Park is located in the western part of Tanzania, bordering Lake Tanganyika. The forested slopes of the Mahale Mountains rise behind the park, home to the world’s largest known population of chimpanzees, with approximately 800 individuals inhabiting the area. Mahale is one of two protected areas for chimpanzees in Tanzania, the other being Gombe Stream. Tracking the chimps of Mahale is a magical experience. The forest also boasts amazing troops of red colobus, red-tailed, and blue monkeys and is home to an endemic race of Angola colobus monkeys. For ornithologists, this is the perfect place to see a kaleidoscopic array of colorful forest birds. Return to the lodge for hot lunch. Relax, read a book, or perhaps catch up on a little journaling. The lodge staff can then lead you to the beach for an early evening kayak on Lake Tanganyika. Return back for evening sundowners, dinner, and another restful slumber to the sounds of birds and waves.

Day 6: Mahale Mountains National Park

After breakfast, enjoy your stay at the hotel reflecting on the experience from the prior day’s trekking. After a hot lunch, your guide will take you on a boat safari. Mahale Mountains National Park includes 100 square kilometers of marine reserve which stretches the length of the Park. Here you will see the hippos in the lake, whose population has been recovered through conservation efforts. You will then take a short river cruise and try the local methods of freshwater fishing. Afterwards, return to camp for evening sundowners, a lovely beach dinner, and overnight at the lodge.

Day 7: Departure

After an early breakfast, board your charter flight for Arusha to connect to your international flight home, or connect to the next leg of your holiday in Tanzania Northern Circuit, Tanzania Southern Circuit, or Zanzibar.
